"Painted Desert II" Abstract Palette Knife Painting by Natasa Vretenar

From Natasa's Art

Memorial Day by Roxanne Steed

10"x8" oil on Belgian linen mounted on archival board

"Each moment is the fruit of forty thousand years."
- Thomas Wolfe

In honor and memory of our fellow military members; for those who did not return, for those far away from home today, and for those still at home with loved ones serving far away....our thoughts are with you today and always.

My hubby has been wanting to put up a flag on our house, as well as bunting for the 'flag day holidays'. So that's where we were yesterday, up in Rhode Island, seeking out a flag store! Of course, on the way home, we stopped by "Farmer's Daughter" nursery to bring home a few things. But that of course is another story for another day. The grill has been dragged out, cleaned up, cranked up, tried out, & is ready for today, too!

This was my final painting during the plein air workshop I conducted today. It offers a good example of the bold, nearly abstract quality of knife painting that result in powerful compositions.

"Poppies Trio" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

I am happy to say that this painting just SOLD. It's always good news for me when this happens and, hopefully, for the buyer. I love painting happy and cheery paintings; the world has enough lousy news for all of us -- why not enjoy some lightheartedness and optimism occasionally? This is what I hope to convey in my paintings, something a bit different, and a bit on the beautiful or maybe light side. Am I succeeding?

Cobalt Iris - Original Palette Knife painting by Nithya Swaminathan

This original painting is a part of my ongoing series of Irises, all done only with the palette knife. I love irises, and find that the knife is a fantastic tool to bring out the structure of the flower in detail. I like the effect of the veins that are created by the knife. Tuscan Melon, French Roses by Roxanne Steed

“The fragrance of flowers spreads only in the direction of the wind. But the goodness of a person spreads in all direction.”

- Chanakya

16"x20" oil on canvas mounted on archival artboard

I heard they were calling for thunderstorms today, (which never materialized), so I decided I would clip some blossoms to paint rather than let the rain beat them up. So I went out & gathered some of the most fragrant roses & peonies. Really delightful and not overpowering like some blooms can be. And the melon.... this beautiful Tuscan melon I picked up at the grocery store yesterday is the most fragrant thing! It begged to be painted, along with the grapes! This is what summer is all about- warmth, frangrance, beauty....a total delight!

I may attempt another photography session in the daylight with this one...I think it could be better...for truer color.

"The Skies at Capitol Reef (Utah)" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

I painted this art piece some time ago and was never satisfied with it; something about the skies, too flat and lifeless. Don't you think the skies have a lot of life in them? I do. When I was younger and we'd be driving somewhere as a family, I'd just space out in the car, looking at the skies, seeing only blue. I was anything but observant. Yeah, there were a few white clouds around...but just blue and white in the sky. Now my take on it is that artists should be especially observant, but I wasn't an artist back then or even considering becoming or imagining being an artist. The sky was blue, that was that, no more to say. As hard as it is to say: I was wrong! Very wrong. The skies have so many colors in them on a daily basis, it is amazing....light blue, cobalt, cerulean, aqua, turquoise, sea mist greens, of course whites, greys. Looking back now, I realize that there's far more to art and observance than meets the eye, no pun intended! Open your eyes!!!!!

"The Skies at Capitol Reef (Utah)", 9"x12" palette knife oil painting on 3/4" linen wrapped gallery canvas (need not be framed), $215 includes s&h in N. America, Paypal preferred, click button below or write KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more info -- Thanks for looking, too!

Red Sails In The Harbor by Roxanne Steed

8"x6" oil on linen mounted on archival board (Raymar)

"The ocean has always been a salve to my soul...the best thing for a cut or abrasion was to go swimming in salt water. Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land."
- Jimmy Buffett

Ahh, so true! After a long miserable winter....while waiting for the garden to emerge in spring...there's nothing like the first days when it's warm enough to 'bring out the boats'. That's the best part of living on the shoreline here in New England. I spent part of a recent weekend here in Mystic & Stonington just watching boats, hanging out by the water. After spending most of my adult life near the shore, I don't think I could ever move inland again. And of all the boats I spotted, I was really intrigued by this one in Stonington harbor with the red sails, backlit by the late afternoon sun...heading back into the harbor.
