 Provence Poppies, Sunflowers and Lavender
12x16
Oil

Three of my favorite flowers combined into one lovely landscape.
I can't wait to start a new garden. There are so many flowers I want to plant and watch mature.
France is an always inspiring palette of color.
Hopefully this brings a bit of sunshine and joy!

"Skinny Dipping", II by Sally Shisler

"Skinny Dipping", II
See "Skinny Dipping, I" below to complete the pair!
(4x4") - 201210
This painting completes a pair - see the first Skinny Dipping a few posts down.  It's a trick trying to render a nude figure whilst maintaining a pure quality.  Nothing wrong with a little seduction. But I feel that an image with even the slightest bit of 'sexy' takes too much away from the virtues of the painting in and of itself. The smallest twist in the stance of the figure can make a huge difference. Hips, in particular, and shoulders too.  I'm not convinced that I didn't avoid it, but I did give it a try.

Lion

Oil
This is still a bit wet, paint is very thick!
I am drawn to the natural beauty and color of this striking animal, and the bold color I use is like the lion's aura. Powerful and full of emotion and strength.

Forest Reflection by Lisa Elley. 2012. 11 x 14. Oil on Canvas. 100% Palette Knife Painting.

I was inspired to paint this autumn forest lake, with the fall colors just everywhere, including the reflection in the water. I can never get enough of the colors of fall.

Laguna Beach House by Deborah Harold

Beautiful Shaw's Cove in Laguna Beach Ca. is the subject of this palette knife work.
The home is the former residence of actress Diane Keaton.
Graced by green plants embracing the home along with the ocean and Dana point in the distance,
the piece is restful. I used a limited palette and added drama in the setting sun sky.
8x10 oil on artisan panel.

Commission Prep Progress

Color Study for Commission
10" x 15"

This commissioned project is fun. I've been pretty busy this month preparing for some upcoming exhibits, so I haven't been able to focus on it like I've wanted. But doing a little work at a time is actually working out a little better. I've done more pencil sketches than I usually do for a commission, and the extra time passing by has given my mind the opportunity to do some extra processing. A color study is a small, quick painting that focuses on the color composition and not the details. Here is the most recent color study for this project. It is definitely not a finished product, however, I couldn't resist giving some detail to the beautiful little girl backlit with sunlight through her white dress.

Niki Gulley at the 57th Street Art Fair in Chicago, IL this weekend

"Sun Drenched IV" ©2012 Niki Gulley
SOLD • 36" x 48" textured painting on wrap around canvas

Sun Drenched IV was inspired by our trip to Provence, France last summer. Our timing was perfect and the sunflowers and lavender were in full bloom. While we came across many fields of lavender, we had to search a little harder for sunflowers. Of course that meant sampling more of the local cuisine and wines for much needed fuel as we looked! (My husband likes to say we have to suffer four our art.)

When we eventually came across these sunflowers, I knew immediately they would make a perfect painting. Their bright, smiling faces as big as dinner plates, the sun dappled path leading you deep into the golden field to the quaint stone farmhouse in the distance, and a beautiful summer day with a few peaceful clouds drifting by made for the ideal subject. The resulting painting is so full of color and texture, and my hope is that when you gaze into it, this piece immediately lifts your spirits and brightens up any spot in your home.

If you're in Chicago this weekend, please stop by my booth at the 57th Street Art Fair where I will be exhibiting more of my sunflower and contemporary landscape paintings, or if you're in the Dallas area, American Fine Art will have about a dozen of my works on display.

"Walking in the Hills", Sally Shisler

"Walking in the Hills" after Edward Henry Potthast
(4x4") - 201209
I came across a few more of Potthast's paintings that reeled me in.  More that I had to challenge myself with.  Hats seem to be hard for me and I'm not sure why.  They're shapes are so simple. You have to remember to follow the shape of the head that's underneath - otherwise the hat can end up looking like a top hat, or a chef's hat - or just plain buffoonery. I've learned SO much from these little studies that I'm hoping to carry over into larger paintings of my own subjects.  Right now I'm working on a commission - my first attempt at translating the tiny to the huge.  I really prefer working with wet, juicy paint.  Easy to do when there's not much space to cover.  Much harder with a large piece because of the obvious additional time it takes to develop the image.  I'm going to post it when it's finished and will talk a little about the insights I've gained during the process.  Happy Memorial Day!!

A Little Time for Tea by Pamela Blaies

20" x 16"
oil on canvas

These pink hydrangeas are from my garden. They love my shady yard and fill the front and back with big, pretty blooms from late April until the heat of mid June hits. I gathered a few the other day to bring inside. They look so beautiful in this blue pitcher. I arranged them with some lemons and a teacup from my mom's wedding china to paint. I love how the colors work together in this painting. Now that I've finished, I think I'll have some tea!

RED TULIPS in CLAY VASE by OLGA WAGNER

I found the reference photo for this gorgeous arrangement on wetcanvas. It cought my eye, because of the warm and classic feel. I decided to use mainly transparent paints for the background to keep the painterly feel of the painting. The opaques came into play in the flowers and pots and greenery.

"Sun Drenched II" textured sunflower painting by Niki Gulley

"Sun Drenched II" ©2012 Niki Gulley
30" x 48" • textured oil on cavan

Inspired by our trip to Provence last summer, I was awestruck by these massive fields of sunflowers blooming. Seeing this brilliant carpet of gold, with its sea of faces smiling towards the sun, just made me feel happy and I wanted you to experience that joy, too. In person “Sun Drenched II” practically leaps off the canvas with its vibrant yellow petals and extremely thick three-dimensional oil paint.

This painting and more of Niki Gulley's textured landscape paintings are on exhibit at American Fine Art Gallery in Dallas. See americanfineart.com for details.

VINEYARD, TREES, GOLDEN SKY, 12x16 inch ORIGINAL OIL by TOM BROWN

EMAIL ME FOR PURCHASING DETAILS:

COLORFUL VINEYARD
12x16 inch ORIGINAL OIL
by TOM BROWN

A rich variety of colors and heavily textured strokes of luscious oils bring something special to this painting. It really must be seen in person to be fully appreciated; computer monitors cannot display the subtle hues and textures in this painting.

This painting is about the “process” of painting as much as the subject itself. Many of the strokes seem almost “out of control” yet this is the result of a very deliberate approach. I sometimes like to incorporate this sort of self-conscious brushwork into a painting to call attention to the actual paint and texture on the surface of the canvas.

I’m not putting this one on eBay. If you would like to own this please email me for details.
