Red Umbrella

Softly muted so the focus is upon the couple, specifically the red umbrella.
Rain, rain, the poor south is flooding right now.

Wings: Painting #10
100 Paintings in 100 Days, $100 each.
8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
by Texas Artist Kay Wyne
Thick paint on this small panel gives the contemporary painting lots of texture. I blended the colors on the panel as I applied the paint with the palette knife. No brushes on this painting. I now have a new favorite knife....it is a number 24, and gives me crisp edges, and can get into small spaces on the canvas. Thanks for viewing this blog and the art posted here. Have a great day.

Daily Painting 1444 Pink Paradise

I have been going through some of my old paintings, this was a plein air  from spring 2004.  There was a building on the painting that I didn't like so I scrapped and sanded it off and re-painted parts of the painting.  I like it much better now!  Its 8 x 10 oil on masonite, $200.

Last Day of the Santa Fe Art Trek w/ Niki Gulley and Scott Williams

SANTA FE ART TREK:  Plein Air Painting / Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 5, afternoon critique & dinner

We finished our Santa Fe Art Trek with a final critique, sharing our work from the various locations. Above you can see each student's interpretation of the Rio Chama. I love how every painter's personality comes through in their work and how uniquely each one saw the same scene. Below are a few more examples of our paintings and pastels from the day we painted in Santa Fe.

To complete the week, those who could make it to dinner enjoyed some delicious red and green chile dishes at La Choza, as we reminisced about the trip and enjoyed our last night together before driving home the next day. A perfect week in Santa Fe!

More Calla Lilies by Pamela Blaies

I found this antique silver creamer that I absolutely adore! It's small, round shape repeats the round edge of the table which I like alongside the delicate curves of a Calla lily. The reflective surfaces of the table and the creamer bounce color and light around the painting adding interest.

Painting Rancho de Taos with Niki Gulley

SANTA FE ART TREK:  Plein Air Painting / Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 3, morning location - Rancho de Taos
10" x 8" textured oil by Niki Gulley

On day 3 of our Santa Fe Art Trek, we headed north to paint Rancho de Taos, made famous in paint by Georgia O'Keefe and in film by Ansel Adams. Today each of my students saw the adobe structure differently, and each chose a unique perspective of the building. Spending most of the morning helping everyone with perspective and getting accurate angles on this tricky pueblo, I had just enough time to do a quick  palette knife sketch of a close up of the church. Choosing vibrant golds and reds for the bell tower set against a gorgeous cobalt sky, really made the colors sing!

Painting the Aspen Trail with Niki Gulley

SANTA FE ART TREK:  Plein Air Painting / Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 2, afternoon location - Aspen Trail
9" x 12" textured oil by Niki Gulley

On day 2 of our Santa Fe Art Trek, the temperature started rising in the afternoon, so we headed up into the mountains for cooler breezes to paint the beautiful aspen trees. We were attracted to the brilliant white trunks with their unique peeling bark and dark protruding knots. I liked how the soft dappled light came through the trees and illuminated the path, leading into the distance. Becoming totally lost in the moment, we set out to capture the peacefulness and contentment we felt that afternoon.

Above: Some of our students painting in the aspen grove, listening to the sounds of the babbling brook nearby. A perfect day!

Curves and Calla Lilies by Pamela Blaies

I love the way the light dances through the paper-thin, curvy, white petals of these Calla Lilies. The shape is echoed by the edge of the round table and a magenta ribbon curling through the composition.

Contemporary Landscape by Kay Wyne

Contemporary Landscape Painting
To be named.....
Oil on Heavy Duty Gallery Wrap Canvas
36" x 36"
This painting has taken weeks to complete. It started out as a landscape with intentions of a mountain range and aspen trees. I stopped at one point and decided I wanted a field of wildflowers. Then after painting all of the wildflowers with thick impasto and the palette knife, I scrapped it all off. I really went through the paint, but the end result is something different than I normally paint---with the texture of the canvas coming through and blended colors. and very few hard edges. It is currently drying at the studio. Thanks for viewing my art. KMW at kay@kwyne.com or 214-532-0325.

Annie's Dance by Bob Read

Annie is a very special little girl.  She has this delightful smile that captivates you the moment you see her. She is shy at first but warms quickly if you just give her a chance to take the lead.  She probably gets this from her mother Kimberly, because Kimberly is very annimated and easy to talk to.  The family lives in Kingsville, Ontario, Canada.

Kimberly sensed almost from the day Annie was born that something wasn't quite right.  As it turned out, she and her husband Dave learned that Annie has CF, cystic fibrosis, a lung disorder that can affect other parts of the body.  Tests later proved that Kimberly also has CF; she's a carrier.

I learned about Annie through an article written by Pat Bailey,  an editor with the Leamington Post, a local newspaper, with a photo of Annie,  from which I painted the portrait above.  Pat wrote about Annie being selected as one of ten finalists in the US and Canada in the Downy's Little Champ contest. The lucky winner and his or her family would get an all-expenses-paid trip to the Olympics just completed in London, England.  I contacted the paper and got permission to use their photo to paint Annie's portrait.

And guess what:  Annie WON the prize!   They got to go to the Olympics.  I actually began Annie's portrait as a surprise for her and her family back in June, simply because it seemed like a cool thing to do.  With a smile like Annie's, how could I not!   I finished the painting and called the Post -  Pat arranged for me to present my painting to the family.  They had just returned from their exciting trip to the Olympics.

The look on Annie's face when I gave her the painting said it all for me.  Talk about a feel-good day.

Day 2, Santa Fe Art Trek with Niki Gulley

SANTA FE ART TREK:  Plein Air Painting / Photography Workshop with Niki Gulley and Scott Williams
Day 2, morning location - downtown Santa Fe
9" x 12" textured oil by Niki Gulley

On day 2 of our Santa Fe Art Trek, we visited this peaceful little street where each home is postcard perfect. Between the unique adobe architecture, the dramatic morning light, and the beautiful plantings surrounding each home, it was hard to choose what to paint! Each student found something different that excited them, and I became fascinated with this window and rain spout, and the deep shadows they were casting. I also loved the glowing Russian sage against the golden terra cotta wall and the beautiful plum tree in the distance.

8" x 8" Oil on RayMar Cotton Panel
by Texas Artist Kay Wyne
This palette knife painting is #5 in this series.....pale robin's egg blue and raw umber are the primary colors in this painting, along with a creamy off-white. There is texture on the canvas as the paint was built up after layer and layer being applied. The soft blue is a good background for the umber tones in the butterfly. This creature evolved after several different drawings on the canvas board. Thanks for viewing....Look for Painting #6 tomorrow.

I Deserve a Cup of Tea by Pamela Blaies

9" x 12"

I've begun the first stages of preparing for my new studio. I worked all day on some of the work that must be done before the construction can start. It was tiring and I didn't get any painting done, but my new space with be almost double what I have now, so I'm very excited.

This is one of my newest paintings. I love the feeling of it.  It also makes me think... I should have a cup of tea right now!

SANTA FE ART TREK:
Day 1, afternoon location - Echo Canyon
12" x 9" textured oil by Niki Gulley

On Day 1 of our Santa Fe Art Trek, we headed north to Echo Canyon, a natural stone amphitheater with beautiful rugged surroundings. After painting the entire landscape in the morning, we decided to focus in on a vignette in the afternoon and isolate our focal point. Some of my students chose trees, others rocks, and I picked this lone, persistent conifer growing out the top of the sandstone formation. I liked the dramatic shadows, the texture in the rocks, and the strong will of this one scraggly pine tree. The sky was amazing with dynamic clouds sweeping into our view from distant showers, and I had to capture some of that movement and energy in this scene, too. Luckily the storms stayed away and we had a lovely afternoon!

Daily Painting 1443 Life in the Savannas Miniature oil painting

I mainly used my painting knife on this one, it has lots of nice textures.

I just was asked the difference between a palette knife and a painting knife.  The palette knife has a wider and longer blade, its used to clean off a palette and to mix paint.  A painting knife can be lots of different shapes, its used to paint with.  You can paint with a palette knife and clean with a painting knife though.
People ask me fairly often if I used my palette to paint with.  No.  That would be hard.  I guess you could use it as sort of  a shovel to paint a very large painting.  I would never tell somebody they can't paint a certain way.

The painting is 4 x 6 inches, oil on masonite.  $100.

Daily Painting 1442 Shady Harbor

This painting sort of painted itself, I started out painting something else and then I saw the trees in the background coming out and I liked how they were looking.  It was reminding me of the St. Lucie river, my dad and I used to go boating there a lot when I was growing up.  We had a 14 foot long Lone Star aluminum boat that looked a lot like the boat in the painting.

We would set in at White City park and explore the river, looking for alligators and turtles.  There were some sandy spots we could put in and then explore on foot, it was a lot of fun.

The painting is 5 x 7 inches,  oil on masonite.  $100.
