In Memory of Lorraine by Sally Shisler

In Memory of Lorraine, 11x14" #201447
Oil on linen board
Available - Contact me for pricing.
scshisler@gmail.com

First of all, I'm LOVING this Raphael linen mounted on 3 ply board.  It's exquisite and truly resilient. I tried another painting (not a keeper) and have wiped and scraped it nearly back to original finish I think 3 or 4 times. I think that one might now have too much bad karma to create on, but I highly recommend board.
I have had a bit of a run with the effects of losing my mom lately.  It's been nearly 8 months, but it's still raw.  Her name is Lorraine and this painting is not of her, but was painted with my heart and soul filled with her spirit. As was yesterday's painting. My work is 100 times more expressive when I absorb myself in emotion of any sort. Certainly this is true of most artists. I feel blessed to have the gift (or affliction - depending on how you look at it) of sensitivity.
Thanks to everyone who has continued to follow my work; comment and ask questions. I'm getting oodles of inquiries about my workshops, classes and lessons.  Oh my!  How exciting!  So I hope I've covered at least some of the pertinent info below. I am hoping to get one scheduled in Carmel, CA for next year. Being that I'm in Orlando, folks from the west have been asking me for years when I am coming to that area.  Keep your fingers crossed ya'll!  And if any of you have contact info for places who can host up to 15 students, please let me know :)

20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

Berries and Creme Lily Trio was my sixth class demo in Rockwall, Texas, and I am always so sad to say farewell to a class of enthusiastic, talented painters, most especially when they bring me pastries! Thanks so much Rosemary, my enabler, donut supplier, and new BFF for bringing two dozen delicieux donuts this morning. What in the world could be more fun than painting fresh flowers in the colors we love, while having just a few glazed treats while we're at it?

My next stop is Kansas City, and Connie Turner's fabulous art studio in Lees Summit. I have one seat that just opened for this workshop, and would love to see you there! With or without donuts! Read more....

Whew - been a while since posting I see. Not due to inactivity. Just had lots of prep to do for what turned out to be another fantastically successful workshop. Thanks to my wonderful students! We had a blast and evidently they all learned much more than they anticipated, which delights the hell out of me. I DO love to teach - the gratification is quite different than that of a successfully created painting. I really believe it lasts longer and fills the heart and soul more completely. Each time I teach, I leave re-energized and ready to press on to the next time I get to share with others. This painting began as a class demo; finished in the studio last night. I am quite happy with it and am feeling more and more confident about delving into more portrait type work.
Next workshop: Wednesday, November 19-21st. Not far away and time for anyone who'd like to participate to make their plans! Especially if travel is involved. Please check in with me for the details. There are 10 spots in this one - would love to see it filled!

October, Ocracoke - by Carrie Jacobson

October, Ocracoke
Oil on canvas, 16x20, $560

This painting captures the wind and power of the weather in October on Ocracoke Island, off Hatteras on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I went there thinking I would paint the ocean, and instead, fell in love with the dunes. It felt like I was painting the spine of the earth.

"Red Poppy Quartet" by Karla Nolan, original watercolor painting

This was a good experience, I've learned a lot about watercolor painting and am enjoying it most days.  There are those "off" days, of course, but one encounters them in any endeavor and that does not exclude any form of art media!  Oh my!  I love the poppies, always have, any kind -- hope you like this painting as much as I do, a great time painting.  Isn't that what it's all about?  (And, yes, I do use palette knives in conjunction with many of the watercolor paintings, amazingly!

Georgie Boy by Kay Wyne

Georgie Boy
12" x 12" Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas
Contemporary Palette Knife Painting
This is yesterday's painting demo at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas for a group of lovely women from Rockwall, Texas.  We had George, the rooster there live from our neighbors at Gecko Hardware Store in Lake Highlands come down and do some modeling.  He was really good for 90 minute session.  I photographed this while it was very wet, so there is a little glare on it.  This paint is very thick!  But because I used impasto, it will dry fast.  It is on a gallery wrap canvas, so no frame is necessary.  Thanks for looking at this blog.  Contact Kay with any comments or questions.  Kay

End of palette rules

 Juiced Up - Sold
5" x 7" oil on panel

I can never bear to throw away good oil paint when a painting is complete, so I usually end up creating a small painting from whatever is on the palette.  One of my secret end of palette rules is that I can't add any more of a colour to what's already on the palette, besides white.

I use a split primary palette which consists of cool and warm versions of each primary, as well as an earth tone like burnt sienna or burnt umber as well as titanium white, so it usually gives me a fair choice of colour mixing options.  However that can depend on how much of each paint colour is left over.

I lucked out with a good quantity of pthalo blue, burnt sienna, cadmium red, alizarin crimson and cadmium yellow, so I could mix pretty much anything I wanted and meet the value ranges needed to create this apple.

My other end of palette rule is that the painting must be small, quick to produce (no more than an hour) and loose.  It should be very impressionistic with the colour "bleeding" into other areas.  The challenge for me is that my end of palette paintings are a big transition in size as I come from large (30" x 40") down to 5" x 7" like this one.  I have to remember to get out the small knife and put the trowel away!

"Santa Fe Doors: Old Wood, Painted Adobe" by Karla Nolan

Another in the series of the Santa Fe doors.  This is the land of enchantment, so they say, and I am in agreement.  I have no idea who painted the adobe wall, it's not really a door, but it is enchanting as is the heavy old wooden door to the left.  It seemed to take forever to paint this small piece, trying to get it right but no too right!  If it's "too right", why it's a photograph and that wasn't my goal, I'd rather you get the gist of the atmosphere in sweet Santa Fe!

"Fresh Flowers" Original Oil Palette Knife Painting by Hallie Kohn Art

I so enjoyed painting the last flower bouquet, and thought I'd like to try another in a square format. This painting gave me a lot of trouble for some reason! I did a lot of scraping and moving things around and finally got things the way I wanted. The painting has a lot of great texture with the knife, and kind of a fall feel. Love the leaves too, and in the end am very happy with it.

Honister Pass, first painting in my new studio by Sarah Morley

This week I have been really busy, moving studios from my tiny, cramped and windowless studio  -  to a new huge studio, still within Vernon Mill, Stockport. It has four  20ft windows and masses of wonderful light! I am blessed! I will be running classes in palette knife painting, taking over the classes ran by the previous incumbent - another knife painter, Alan Knight - and hopefully adding  a few new people as well. So if anyone in the North West of England fancies trying their hand at knife painting please contact me on 07946432818. You will be made very welcome!

Here is this weeks's painting - a large 3ft x 3ft canvas. It's the view of the valley in the Honister Pass, Cumbria. It is painted with knives ( of course!) and I am still trying to decide whether the foreground is finished as I had a few issues with the rock pools in the bed of the stream. Any thoughts gratefully received. This is expected to retail at $700 plus shipping.

Class Demonstration

Sold

Fuschia Glads and Sunflowers was one of six class demonstrations created in Memphis-Collierville, Tennessee this past weekend. I love visiting my Memphis ladies, what a warm, friendly bunch - and the gourmet cake donuts and SUH-weet tea kept our creative energy high - no rest needed! The moment I arrived back in Big Ole Big D on Monday, I found a pile of boxes, supply deliveries, my new Felix clip stand for my IPad (*sound of harps*), and most exciting of all, my newest DVD, Orange Ranunculus and Daisies. I need to test that DVD on a few other devices and then will be ready to share this new step by step demonstration in oils with you. Stay tuned for the big announcement of when those will be ready, by signing up right here for my art newsletter. I'll be giving away an original oil painting, too, so you don't want to miss it. Besides, where else can you find reliably endless supplies of silly pug photos, mixed in with all the art? Hmmm???
