Vegetable Still Life, Red Pepper Painting, "Big Red" by Carol Schiff, 20x24x1.5" Oil

It has been some time since I have painted a vegetable still life, so I decided to try one this week.  In the past I painted every fruit and vegetable you could imagine, but they were small pieces, usually 6x8" or smaller.

This one is actually 20x24" and painted with a combination of palette knife and brush.  You will notice with this next image below, that the the background is actually more gray green than the blue shad above.  I must have taken 20 photos of this, trying to get the colors correct, but in the end I had to choose between the bluish background and the front end of the pepper turning a garish orange mustard hue. Yuck!  At any rate, the photo below seems quite accurate in both places.

Thank you for viewing my blog today.  I hope you enjoy this vegetable still life painting.  Give it a pin!

New "Autumn Reflections" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Autumn Reflections" ©2015 Niki Gulley
18" x 48" textured oil painting on gallery wrap canvas

In Autumn Reflections, I wanted to give you the feeling of a beautiful, peaceful retreat on a colorful autumn day. To create that feeling of being immersed in nature, I chose this long panorama format so that the sanctuary is completely engulfed in fall foliage, a perfect escape from bustling city life. Loaded with uplifting color, still waters suggest a calming effect. One small ripple in the lake's distance lets you know that some ducks just swam by and you are surrounded by wildlife, not a care in the world.

If you're in the Dallas area this coming weekend and you'd like to see Autumn Reflections and more of my palette knife paintings in person, please stop by my booth at the Cottonwood Art Festival.

SUMMER'S GONE, 6X6, OIL, SOLD

Don't you just love sunflowers?  They are so expressive the way they follow the sun with their heads.  I especially love the giant 7 foot tall ones.

I love the way they poke their heads between the slats of a fence as if they are saying hello and then they bow when their time is gone.

I am happy to announce that I have been invited to join DailyPainters.com.  I hope you will take the time to visit my gallery on their wonderful website.

Jetty in the Sun by Kathryn Stotler

This is a view of our north jetty on one of our hot, low tide days.  Many times you will find fishermen on the top of the jetty with their lines in the bay but this day it was all mine.  At low tide like this the water stays behind the rocks even the ones that are old and broken down.  During normal or high tides I am able to paint pools on this side of them with wonderful craggy reflections.

Cave by Kathryn Stotler

This was painted from a photo I took of the rock formations at a wonderful spot called Swimmer's Delight.  It is acrylic on paper - Arches watercolor paper - the thickest I could find.  I really like the way I can use the knife to scrape through layers of paint and have the paper absorb the lightest colors.  The green reflections are from trees that sit high on top of these rock formations.

"Coral Moon Behind Mountains" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting

Wow!  Talk about synchronicity and timing and such!  The blood moon that occurred in recent days is all over the media and, amazingly, I am still in my lunar-tique phase, as you may have noticed from recent posts.  This painting is especially experimental, with the unusual lower mountains.  Challenging to paint, I'll say, but I am enjoying the final result.  What do you think?

Small Oil Landscape, "Florida Wetlands I" 6x8" SOLD

How did it get to be September already?  Obviously, this year is going to buzz by as fast as the others all seem to do.

I have been painting commissions for the last month, but I try to slip a few daily paintings into the mix every week.

SOLD

I have been enjoying my little floral still life paintings, but had the desire to try a landscape this week.  Florida has the most beautiful wetlands, teaming with wildlife.  Of course, some of that wildlife is on the dangerous and creepy side, so I was very careful where I stepped.

This is Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Brevard County, Florida.  It sits between the ocean and the Indian River on a thin strip of land.  Next time you visit Florida, try to get off the beaten path of beaches and Disney and enjoy the less well known beauty.

Just Sold - "Scenic Route" Palette Knife Oil Painting by Dallas Artist Niki Gulley

“Scenic Route” ©2015 Niki Gulley
SOLD • Textured Oil Painting on wrap around canvas • 20” x 60”

My husband and I love exploring the back roads whenever we’re en route somewhere. We always discover such interesting places, and the scenery is so much more picturesque than along the highway. It’s fun to slow down and enjoy the journey with no agenda, which is what I had in mind when I painted “Scenic Route,” a beautiful autumn drive through the winding fall foliage.

Original oil painting Paris Romance commission by Karen Tarlton

UPS can be "not so careful" I've found.

Abstract,Mixed Media Oil and Acrylic, 10x10" "Layers II"

I have been feeling really adventurist lately and have been experimenting with some mixed media works.  The key word here is "experimenting" which means I have put in lots of hours and not so much in the "results" catagory.

I used an acrylic pouring medium on my support and found a nice harmony of colors. When it had dried, I started working over it with my oil paints

I tried to let areas of the underpainting show through.

I always enjoy working on something new and I am sure I will be trying this technique again in the future.

BEACHSIDE - 8X10 - SOLD

I got interested in doing seascapes. I was at the beach with my camera and was inspired by all the beautiful blues and greens in the water. I did 3 8x10's and 4 5x7's, so far. This is the first one I did and probably my favorite.
