Painting Inspiration and Wip underpainting by Marion Hedger

Var vineyards for painting inspiration

I went hunting for autumn vineyard inspiration on Saturday and I wasn't disappointed. We travelled around the area between Les Arcs and Salernes in the Var and we weren't disappointed.

The Var has a lot more autumn colour than the Alpes Maritime, the area where I live, and, as we discovered, is much colder in the mornings. The day was beautiful, with sunshine and clear blue skies and luckily the temperature eventually reached 23 degC later, much more my type of temperature.

I have been inspired, with several paintings running through my head and I have started on one. Here is the underpainting - warning sunglasses needed!

The Red Wall by NY artist Celeste Plowden

12x16 acrylic on canvas, available at

Small Tree Painting, "My Morning Companion" 6x8" SOLD

When I spend time in the Smoky Mountains, I start many of my days on the porch, with a cup of coffee.  It's a special time of day as the sun streams in over the mountains and starts to burn off the protective layer of "smoke" from the night before.

SOLD

It's just me, my coffee, and this old dogwood tree that sits in our yard.  A very nice way to start the day.

Soon the sun will rise over the mountain tops and light will stream in behind the tree.  My little special moment of the morning is gone and it is time to start my day.

Do you have a special moment each morning?

Flower Painting | Floral Still Life | Small Oil Painting | Rhododendron by Carol Schiff 6x8 Oil

Still painting flowers!  Hope you have not tired of them yet.  I will try to break up the flower posts with other subject matter, just to keep you awake.

$95 + 6.50

This petite bouquet of rhododendron blossoms grew next to my house in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I snipped a few and placed them in a jelly jar on my kitchen window sill.  I love the effect of the darkened flowers with the bright light flowing in behind them.

My goal with these little works is to keep strong basic shapes and let the viewer's eye fill in missing pieces.  As you can see from this photo, the paint is thick and the strokes are few.

Happy Morning to you!

Well, here I am posting another dog portrait.  There is good reason for that.  I have been working on several commissions for the same gentleman.  He loves his dogs and wanted oils of them.

This is Ruby, enjoying a little shut eye on the porch.  We all love to do that, right?

Reworking an old painting - WIP by Marion Hedger

Work in progresss
by Marion Hedger
40x40cm

I am reworking one of my old paintings that has been sitting in the corner for a few years. I came across it today and felt it had some good points and was worth using as a basis for a new painting.

I didn't take a photo before I started but remembered about half an hour into it. It will give you some idea of what the original looked like. I am sure I have a photo of it somewhere but I have changed computers twice (or maybe three) times since then. I wanted to start painting so will see if I feel like wading through my old backups later.

I like how the yellow tulips fade into the background of this photo. I will try to keep that effect, but will be surprised if I can resist putting more paint on!

12x12 acrylic on canvas, available at

Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Mountain Landscape Painting, 6x8" Oil, "High in the Sky"

If you live in Colorado, you probably don't consider 6,000+ feet as high in the sky.  That is the altitude of Water Rock Knob, North Carolina, which is depicted in this daily painting

I returned from a week touring Colorado.  It is incredibly beautiful and wild.  Where else can you go to see a herd of antelope grazing, or big horn sheep!  The prairie is as gorgeous as the mountains.  I wasn't expecting the beauty of rolling hills, of mother deer with their fawns walking through the waist high grasses.

But this painting is from a kinder, gentler mountain.  What is high in the Blue Ridge is a starting point in the Rockies!  I love both places.  Being a flatlander, I feel blessed to be able to visit these stunning landscapes.

Flower Painting, Daily Painting, "Sunshine Mix" by Carol Schiff, 8x6" Oil SOLD

Today's flower painting is a little reminder that spring is not to far away! It seems like this must be the longest winter in the history of the world!
SOLD
I liked the fresh brushwork and the abstract shapes in this painting

I like painting flowers because I love the vibrant colors and I can make the shapes whatever I want them to be.  Most of my flower paintings are free of detail and stress.  I almost feel like I am playing when I paint them.  The next time you are close to tearing your hair out, I highly recommend, step back and take a deep breath.....and work on a flower painting!

Don't forget to pin it!

Lavender Summer by Marion Hedger

Lavender Summer Provence Landscape
18x24cm (approx 7x10inch)
Oil on 3mm MDF canvas panel

This painting nearly slipped through the net. I painted it last year after my yearly trip to the lavender fields. For some reason I missed posting it! A shame because I really like the way it it turned out.

I thought you might like to see my inspiration photo. As you can see I used my artistic license to it's full extent, adding foreground colour and encouraging the far lavender field into bloom.

Tell me how you would have handled this photo.

Delight, by NY artist Celeste Plowden

16x20 acrylic on canvas . available at

Tree painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 6x8" Oil Landscape

We are rather tree challenged here in Florida.  We have beautiful palm trees, but when it comes to the huge leafy trees of my childhood, in the north, not so much.

Enter the live oak.  It's big, not really that leafy, but long, long beautiful branches, often draped with Spanish moss.

This one is just a baby, but I couldn't resist painting it as it seemed to glow in the sunshine.

I painted with a combination of palette knife and brush which gave it a yummy texture.

I want to do more tree studies.  They are all so unique and so beautiful.

"Pink Monet" by Ann McCann 20 X 20 Oil

This is a pink flowering tree on the side of Monet's house in Giverny that was blooming in May 2012 when we visited. And yes, his house is really pink too with green shutters. It is a very lovely place with flowers everywhere. I painted a much smaller version that a friend bought a year ago, and I've wanted to do a larger version for some time now.

Seascapes and Hawii Five O, Seascape Oil Painting, Ocean Painting

Over the years, I have painted many seascapes, both impressionistic and abstract.  It is part of my environment, living on the coast of Florida, and sometimes seascapes showed up almost without my intention.

On the beach

The paintings always sold very well and I have featured a few of them as giclee prints.  Can you image my escitement when two of my prints were sold for set design on the CBS show "Hawaii Five O?

A Call From Mother

Yes, it's true!  I still can not believe it! This was one of my favorite shows in the 70's and I love the currant version too.  I will be checking out every episode in the upcoming season, trying to get a quick glimpse of my art.  Unfortunately, I have no information about when this will happen.

The good news is, you can own them too.  Both prints are available in the sizes of your choice at the links below the images.

Oil painting, painted with a palette knife

The local nursery always have some baskets planted up early in the season. I couldn't resist and bought 3 for the carport and front entrance. It is a nice sunny spot and they flourish there. Elsewhere I will have to wait a little longer.

There is something therapeutic about painting these small paintings full of colour. I am definitely 'in the zone' mixing the colours and playing (sorry carefully considering) with the placement of colour and what will work with what.

Dog Painting, Daily Painting, Pet Portrait, Small Oil Painting, "The Mutt" 8x8x1.5" Oil

What is your favorite subject matter to paint?  I admire artists who paint the same objects time after time, something I can not seem to master.  I hop from subject matter to subject matter and even from impressionist to abstract.  I cannot seem to control my inner child artist!

When I saw this image of my cousin's dog, I wanted to paint it immediately.  You can just tell that she (her name is Sally) is looking in the face of her beloved owner, looking for a pat on the head or a little taste of something forbidden.

detail

That is what hooked  me on this image.  It's not not the subject matter at all.  It could be the beautiful colors of a sunset, the light on a wave, the turn of a leaf......something that appeals to me.  Today it's those eyes.

I would love to hear why you paint, what you paint.

Thank you for reading my blog today.
